How to Check if MCB is Not Working & What to Do? https://www.ampkart.com/how-to-check-if-mcb-is-not-working-what-to-do/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 13:07:20 +0000 https://www.ampkart.com/?p=20168

MCB is one of the genius inventions of mankind that is massively underappreciated. MCB is an abbreviation for Miniature Circuit Breaker, and this invention has been saving us thousands and lakhs of damage every day from short circuits and overloads electrical damage.

Normally when an MCB trips, we should be thankful that the MCB worked and it just saved us from fluctuations in electricity damaging our appliances connected throughout our house. But when the same MCB keeps on tripping multiple times a day, it becomes quite irritating. So today, we will be sharing important checks and ‘what to dos’ to help you correct the faulty MCB or replace it with a new one.

How Does an MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) Work?

MCB breaks the circuit whenever there is an overload or short circuit in Electricity. Thus, saving expensive appliances which would have otherwise got damaged.

The metallic plate inside the MCB overheats and expands whenever there is a current overload or short circuit. This metal expanding, in turn, releases a spring mechanism which turns it off breaking the connection and circuit.

Some MCB nowadays has an Electromagnetic mechanism, where a metal part inside turns into a magnet when a certain level of current flows through it. This in turn displaces the switch and turns it off breaking the circuit.

Reasons the MCB May be Faulty or Tripping Very Easily:

  • Defective or Faulty MCB – If the MCB is tripping very frequently, then the most common reason could be a faulty part inside the MCB or the MCB as a whole. It could be recent damage or a defective MCB from the start and the solution would be to replace it with a new MCB.

  • Overloaded Circuit –An overloaded circuit could be another reason why the MCB is tripping so frequently and causing inefficiency in the system. If this is the problem, then it’s best to call an electrician and get the circuit and electric connection checked and fixed.

  • Faulty Appliance – A faulty appliance connected to the circuit could be another reason the MCB is tripping very frequently. In this case, MCB is working alright but we need to find the faulty appliance. Switch of all appliances and reset the MCB, then switch on one appliance at a time to see if the MCB is tripping. Voila! You have found your faulty appliance.

  • Cheap or Low-Quality MCB – It’s been often seen that cheap and low-quality MCBs, from brands that use ineffective materials and metals inside the circuit breaker, are a major reason for MCBs working inefficiently and tripping very easily; or worse not tripping at all during a short circuit or current overload causing massive damages to appliances connected.

  • Dust or Loose Connection – Sometimes when we purchase a new MCB; either the MCB Switch is dolly free or there is no electric continuation in the circuit breaker. The solution would be to bang the MCB on a flat surface with some pressure on each side 3-5 times, thus removing the dust and correcting the MCB.

Newly Purchased MCB Not Working?

f you have recently purchased the circuit breaker and after coming back home and installing it you realised that there is no electricity continuation in the MCB or that the MCB Switch has become loose and free often referred to as ‘Dolly Free’ then this advice is for you. If you haven’t recently purchased the MCB, then skip to the next section.

If you’re still reading then don’t worry, this is a common occurrence in new MCBs and the reason could be dust in between the metal connector inside the MCB, or some spring or clip is loose inside the miniature circuit breaker. The very simple home solution for this problem which solves almost 70-80% of new MCB issues is banging the MCB on a flat surface on each side 3-5 times.

Watch the video below for a brief explanation of the process

If the MCB is still not working, you can contact your seller for a return or exercise your warranty with the Brand Manufacturer depending on the time elapsed after purchasing the circuit breaker.

How to Check if the MCB is Faulty?

There are 2 ways to check whether the MCB is faulty or defective. The first is the process of elimination, and the second is to use a 230V multimeter voltage tester to check MCB faults.

First Way to Check for Faulty MCB – Process of Elimination

  • Turn off all devices and appliances in the circuit and unplug all chargers and appliances. Reset or Switch MCB on.
  • Now, switch on your devices and appliances one by one. The faulty appliance will trip the MCB.
  • If none of the appliances tripped the MCB, then that means all appliances are fine and the fault maybe with the MCB or the wiring connection.
  • Some MCBs give a burning smell or show discoloration to indicate damage.

Second Way to Check for Faulty MCB – Using a 230V Multimeter Voltage Tester

  • Turn off and unplug all devices and attach the tester to the circuit.
  • If the tester is showing at least 230V capacity, then the MCB is fine.
  • If the multimeter is showing 0V, then the MCB is faulty.

These Miniature Circuit Breakers are a use-and-throw concept. It means that the faulty MCB cannot be repaired and you just have to buy a new one to replace it. We always recommend contacting a qualified electrician to replace your MCB or correct any wiring errors. Replacing the circuit breaker can cause further damage to your connection and appliance, not to mention the risk of
electrocution.

How to Choose a Suitable Electronic AC Starter Switch? https://www.ampkart.com/how-to-choose-a-suitable-electronic-ac-starter-switch/ Fri, 30 Jul 2021 07:55:14 +0000 https://www.ampkart.com/?p=15486

AC comes in all shapes and has different levels of power. How do you know which starter to choose? Keep reading to learn more about choosing the ideal A.C starter for your needs.

Switching Speed

Although there are various switches available, most of them do the same thing-turn on or off the power to the circuit by making or disconnecting electrical connections. The speed at which the circuit breaks depends on whether you are using AC or DC power.

For DC, you have a constant current in one direction, while for AC, the magnitude and direction of the current will change.

Suppose you have two circuits, each of which has the same current: one is an AC circuit and the other is a DC circuit. When you turn off the power to the AC circuit, a voltage spark is generated in the switch that shuts off quickly, which is an ideal state. This is because the AC sine wave is naturally zero amperes twice per cycle. Therefore, when the power is turned off, there is a 50% probability that the circuit power will not be at the maximum level. However, this is not the case in DC circuits, where the current and voltage are constant. When the DC circuit is de-energized, the arc voltage in the circuit breaker may take longer to extinguish. This is why the Electronic A.C. Starter Switch speed of the switch (the speed at which the switch contacts open and close) in a DC circuit is so important. The goal is to make the Electronic A.C. Startercontacts separate as quickly as possible when closing the circuit. This helps to minimize the arc generation and extinguishing time.

The longer the circuit breaker opens or interrupts power to the circuit, the longer the arc. This can cause the switch contacts to be squeezed, which can lead to overheating, premature failure of the switch, and even fire.

Know the Load Type of Switch of Electronic A.C. Starter

Speed of the switching operation, the nature of the electrical load is also important in determining the suitability of the switch. Will the inductive or resistive load change? This will affect the voltage and current that your switch must handle. The uses resistive loads (R) as examples, heaters or traditional incandescent bulbs, for these types of loads, when you open the circuit, its current will immediately increase to a steady-state without first exceeding this level. At the same time, most of the voltage remains stable.

In contrast, an inductive load (L), such as a transformer or a motor, first absorbs a large amount of current when it is first turned on, and then stabilizes after a few seconds to generate an inrush current. In addition, when the inductive load is turned off, a huge voltage is generated on the contacts of the arc switch. The arc voltage may be much higher than the rated value of the circuit breaker, which can cause contact pitting and shorten the life of the circuit breaker.

These peak fluctuations in current and voltage are important when selecting switches. If the electrical rating is not enough, your circuit breaker will immediately fail or greatly shorten its service life of the circuit breaker.

The DC voltage rating on the switch is usually much lower than its AC voltage rating. For example, a switch rated at 15 A at 250 Vac is rated at 15 A at 12 Vdc. The only difference is whether it is AC or DC.

Choose a Certified Switch

There is no doubt that there are many switches suitable for your application, but it is best to choose a switch certified to a recognized standard. This will ensure that it works both electrical and mechanical as expected.

For certification or accreditation to be effective, the approval agency mark or mark usually appears somewhere on the switch body or as an indicator at the end of the switch part number.

Make the Right Choice Electronic A.C. Starter OLP3+

The new OLP 3+ can controlled motor starter with a three-digit digital display that can show the size of all important parameters necessary for the proper operation of the air conditioner. The new OLP 3+ is a state-of-the-art microprocessor-controlled motor starter with a three-digit digital display that can show the size of all important parameters necessary for the proper operation of the air conditioner.

The most notable feature of this Electronic A.C. Starter OLP 3+ is that they show the relationship between the time-tested combination and voltage, current, and time.

  • Electron AC Starter Switches 1 Phase Digital OLP3+
Electron AC Starter Switches 1 Phase Digital OLP3+
    1,1022,500

Voltage Check: Once the electronic starter A.C. exceeds the safety limit (between 160-270V), OLP 3+ will limit the line voltage and trip.

Check Amplifier: One of the main causes of cooling system failure is untested current input. The AC starter will continuously check the current supply, and if the current exceeds the set safety limit, the output will be stopped, thereby protecting the compressor from excessively long starting time or rotor stall. The higher the load, the faster the transmission response. Then the size of the unsafe current is displayed on the screen.

Moreover, since these switches are able to isolate a circuit within a system or grid for repairs or maintenance, they are commonly seen on power lines, grids, and other similar structures.

You may have noticed that isolators and circuit breakers have a close link; in addition, there are many people that believe they do the exact same thing. However, they have crucial differences that distinguish them, such as their functions and skills.

Most appliances require an isolator switch; tampering with them while they are turned on can result in mishaps, regardless of the appliance. Smaller appliances do not require a specific isolation switch before maintenance because wall plugs can also serve as isolation switches. Due to their indispensable features, isolator switch price may be higher than that of normal switches, especially for larger appliances.

Some of the instruments and equipment that require an isolation switch are as follows.

Extractor Fans

Extractor fans are commonly seen in bathrooms and kitchens, and they work by removing stale, humid air while replacing it with fresh air. The increasing number of households and building rules has led to an increase in the requirement of extractor fans. However, because of the complexity and power of these devices. They need isolation switches for repairs and maintenance of the devices.

These types of devices commonly use 3-pole isolation switches, as there are three lines that must be disconnected in order to totally isolate the fan without affecting other appliances. If a Switchgear isolator switch isn’t used in these devices, the maintenance will require the shutdown of a significant number of circuits which can potentially affect other appliances.

Showers

Electrical showers are commonly used in most homes and using them with a Schneider isolator switch is extremely necessary and important. Showers tend to be fitted in an area where installation of electrical showers carries a greater risk of electric shocks and bathrooms tend to be more humid and wet. As a result, an isolation switch must be installed in electrical showers for safety reasons or else it can be dangerous.

Refrigerators

All kinds of refrigerators especially the bigger ones require an isolation switch to make maintenance and repairs easier. Like showers, refrigerators are in close contact with water and can be hazardous if not managed appropriately.

Moreover, most freezers and refrigerators have difficult-to-reach outlets, requiring you to touch or move the appliance. This could be extremely dangerous especially if it develops a defect. This is why it is really important to use an isolator switch and not having one can be hazardous.

Air Conditioners

Although hardwiring your air conditioner to the switchboard is acceptable, it has quite a few disadvantages and can even be dangerous in some situations.

Therefore, it is a good idea to have a Legrand isolator switch installed on your outdoor unit. This is because the switch can protect the device from lightning strikes during a storm and can prevent your home safety switch from triggering in the event of a malfunction.

Other Household Appliances

By now, we know how isolator switches are used with respect to larger electrical appliances and power systems. But they are important for smaller devices and appliances as well. In this case, the plugin conjunction with the wall socket acts as an isolator switch and there is no need of using an isolator switch.

It mainly serves the same purpose as a Siemens isolator switch because once you switch it off at the socket, the power gets interrupted for the device only. This does not involve any other appliance.

When Does an Outlet Create Fire Sparks? https://www.ampkart.com/when-does-an-outlet-create-fire-sparks/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 10:45:33 +0000 https://www.ampkart.com/?p=15395

We are all aware of the impact of electricity on our lives. In this current generation, we are unable to imagine ten minutes of our life without electricity and electric appliances. Since electricity is highly beneficial and dangerous, safety is extremely necessary as well.

You may have noticed sparks in electric outlets. You may have noticed these sparks despite having MCB distribution boards at homes. Well, these sparks may often lead to dangerous accidents. Many a time these unnoticed sparks have led to fires and caused short circuits. This is why it is important to understand the underlying cause that leads to the same. These are as follows.

Normal Sparks:

If you are amongst those people who start overthinking as soon as you notice a spark in your outlet, you need to relax. Often outlets create sparks due to no serious reason. These sparks are caused when the normal electric current is transferred through the plug of the appliance as soon as it is attached to the socket. On such an occasion, sparks are normal and do not need you to be worried.

Short Circuit:

Sparks caused by short circuits are a matter of great concern. Short circuits are mainly caused when the outlet gets overheated due to the sudden passage of a large amount of electricity. In such a situation, the insulation can melt the wire and lead to wire breakage. This may cause severe electric fires.

Contact with Water:

You may have often heard elders asking children to refrain from touching electric switches with wet hands. The main reason behind such a piece of advice is electric shocks. When water from your hands comes in contact with the electric outlet, it may tug at your finger and give you high voltage shocks. Sometimes these shocks can be dangerous and even fatal.

Old Outlets:

The fact that old Modular switches outlets can cause sparks or lead to dangerous situations is barely paid any heed. However, it is necessary to ponder upon this issue. Sometimes old plugs are the very reason behind dangerous fires and accidents. This mainly happens because with time plugs lose their efficiency and lead to lose connections.

Overheated Wires:

You may have seen or personally used a multi-socket extension board. This electrical wire & cable device usually allows you to connect more than one appliance at the same time. However, when multiple appliances are attached to this board, it tends to extract more electricity from a single point. This may lead to the melting of the wires and cause serious accidents.

Despite being dependent on electricity, it is essential to maintain safety while dealing with it. It is often said that a matchstick is laughed upon until it unleashes its ability to burn down an entire forest. This is why it is essential to use electrical circuit breakers for your homes, industries, and other spaces.
