The RCCB is a protective device that prevents people from electrocution and fire caused by electrical shock. It tracks the current and disconnects the circuit automatically if an earthing fault occurs, shielding everyone. Working of RCCB

Kirchhoff’s Kirchhoff Law is the working theory of the RCCB. According to Kirchhoff’s Current Law, the total current entering a circuit’s junction is exactly equal to the total current leaving the same junction for a parallel road. The amount of electric current flowing through the live conductor should be equal to the amount of current flowing through the neutral conductor for the circuit to operate safely. The RCCB detects the difference in the solenoid and disconnects the circuit’s power supply within milliseconds. This shields the individual from harm.

The ‘rated sensitivity for leakage current’ of most RCCBs is less than 30 mA. The system comes with a test button that, when pressed, causes an imbalance in the neutral coil of the solenoid, causing the RCCB to trip and the supply to be disconnected, allowing the RCCB’s reliability to be tested.

Advantages of RCCB

  • It defends against both earth faults and residual current.
  • When the circuit’s rated sensitivity is surpassed, the circuit is disconnected.
  • RCCBs have test buttons that, when pressed, mimic a “false fault” condition, causing the circuit to be disconnected. This button is useful because it is used to check if the system is working.
  • It also guards against voltage variations in the circuit (rise and fall in voltage levels).

Disadvantages of RCCB

  • Shot circuits and over-current faults are not detectable. It must always be used in conjunction with an MCB for this.
  • Only if the current flows from phase to ground can it effectively defend against electric shock. If the current flows from phase to phase through an individual or from phase to neutral, it does not protect against electric shock.
  • A small amount of current is often directed to the earth when there is a sudden shift in electrical loads (this occurs mostly in old appliances). RCCBs, which are highly sensitive, tripped, causing the circuit to be disconnected, even though there was no chance of electrocution.
