WHAT IS AN AUTOMATIC CHANGEOVER SWITCH?

An automatic changeover switch, also known as a transfer switch, is an electric smart switch which is designed to transfer electricity from the commercial power supply grid to a local generator in case of a power outage to your house.

ITS WORKING:

Changeover switches have simpler working mechanisms. Typically, they are connected directly to the local generator, commercial power grid or the power line and the residence or a commercial site. When faced with a power outage, the complex owner can simply switch over to  the generator by the means of a changeover switch. This mechanism is followed by a manually operated changeover switch.  Whereas, an automatic changeover switch will automatically switch over your house’s power when a power outage occurs.

Power outages, also called power cut, blackout or  power failure, occur when there is a loss of electrical power network supply due to short circuits, cascading failures or fuse breaker. Power failures result in large scale blackouts and may range from a building, to a lane, or even to an entire city. 

Locations like hospitals, mines, sewage treatment plants are the most critical sites for power failures as they not only risk total blackout but also jeopardize environment and public safety.

Concerning its obvious threats to environment, one can look back at the Northeast blackout of 2003. 

In August, 2003, North-eastern United States and some closely located Canadian Province experienced the most widespread power blackout lasting from more than five hours at some locations. The blackout was caused because some overgrown trees got mingled with high voltage electric supply cables. Then followed a software crash that affected nearly 55 million people in north-eastern parts of the United States and Ontario province in Canada. The energy waste was unimaginably high.  The waste meant so much more contingent to the fact that our environment suffers a great deal in production and even distribution of electric supply.

The rather complex system of generation, delivery and end users is referred to as electric power grid. 

The three major resources used in generation of electricity are natural gas, nuclear power and coal. The fact is not avoidable that the burning of fuel causes air pollution and leads to emission of greenhouse gases such as CFCs and other harmful contaminants like sulphur oxides, etc. These pollutants rise up in the atmosphere and hampers the ozone layer causing an overall temperature rise on earth, i.e. global warming.

In cases of blackouts, the amount of electrical energy squandered not only causes great monetary causes but also evinces the manipulation of fuel resources and its dreadful aftermath. 

Using changeover switches to tackle the problem of power outage is not just wise but advisable as well. They can automatically switch over the power supply from the electric power grid to a stand-by generator causing minimum energy loss.
