Guide to Buying Halogen Lamps

Halogen Light Fittings

Like conventional incandescent bulbs, Halogen lamps have a tungsten wire but often have a capsule containing a small halogen gas quantity (such as iodine or bromine). Continue reading to find out more.

How do Halogens Work?

As tungsten filament and halogen gas are mixed, a chemical process known as the halogen cycle occurs. The vaporised tungsten then forms a halide – a product made up of two elements – with the halogen gas resulting from this reaction. The halide splits off and releases tungsten back into the filament as it hits a high enough temperature, increasing the lamp’s lifespan. The filament is accumulated on the glass bulb’s interior in a regular incandescent lamp, decreasing its brightness over time.

Types of Halogen Bulbs & Their Uses

Mains-Voltage Halogen Spotlights: Because of the wide range of products available, halogen is one of the most used technologies in spotlighting. Its excellent colour representation is another explanation for its success. A halogen bulb emits light that contains all the visible spectrum colours, allowing for more consistent colour exposure than LED or fluorescent technologies.

The most popular type of mains-voltage halogen reflector is the GU10 spotlight. Emphasis lighting, task lighting, and ambient lighting are all examples of its implementations.

Low Voltage Halogen Spotlights: Halogen AR111 spotlights are widely used in stores and showrooms, and their filaments are typically shielded with a metal block to avoid glare. The hugely successful MR16 is adored by everyone, thanks to its wide range of designs and beam angles.

Low-voltage spotlights come with either an aluminium-coated reflector that directs infrared heat outward or a dichroic filter that permits infrared heat to pass through the lamp’s back. As a result, a dichroic spotlight may be used to display heat-sensitive things such as food, artwork, or textiles.

Linear Halogens: Floodlighting and surveillance lights use linear halogen lights with R7S bases. The lamp’s filament is held across its length, and the rounded supports on either end of the lamp fit into sprung brushes. To sustain the bulb’s longevity, the filament must stay horizontally, as says the name.

Capsules: Caravan, cruise, pelmet, and desk lighting all use halogen capsules. They are available in G4 or GY6.35 low-voltage or G9 mains-voltage formats. The appended numbers in their names refer to the length between their two pin cores in millimetres.

The G9 is the smallest mains-voltage halogen bulb around, and it’s commonly used in small lighting fixtures because it doesn’t need a 12V transformer.

For applications such as theatre, TV, movie, or projector lighting, high-powered specialised halogen capsules are also accessible.
